A mile away from downtown and the banks of the Mississippi River is Lafayette Square, the first official suburb of Saint Louis. Its Victorian architecture and manicured park made Lafayette Square the place to be in the late 1800s. In 1896 a tornado reduced many of the homes in the area to rubble. As a result, many residents decided to rebuild their lives in a different area of the city and eventually the neighborhood was abandoned. Today Lafayette Square is again thriving and is listed as a National Historic Area.
